Lifeskils Development is happy to be supporting such a worthy facility. The Zacarias Guerra House is a home for troubled and abandoned children offering shelter, education, and a family atmosphere. After entering the house, kids typically stay until they turn 18. While in residence all of the needs of the child are attended to including nutrition, medical, housing, education and spirtiual. The home offers counseling services and directs a follow-up program for those who graduate. The attractive 80 acre grounds include dormitories, a cafeteria, recreation room, classrooms and a computer lab. Everything at the House is donated, and the staff sometimes cannot afford the cost of upkeep for donated equipment. For more information on the home, please visit the Lifeskils provided site by clicking here or typing in your web browser http://www.hogarzacariasguerra.org. Urgent Needs List In early June we were visiting the Zacarias Guerra House delivering medical supplies and a donation for the music program of $1,000. During our visit we were presented with a list of urgently needed medical supplies. To view the list please click here. The center has also been in need of eyeglass frames for children. Working with the US Lions Club, we were able to set up a program to provide eye examinations and glasses. While this might sound simple enough to accomplish, it is nearly impossible to understand the time constraints on the staff of the home. A small staff of 6 or 7 full time leaders and counselors act as mothers and fathers to these youngsters. Can you imagine raising 250 children? Every small piece of the puzzle we can provide takes a tiny burden off the backs of the exceptional and dedicated staff.
Volunteer English teaching program Lifeskils Development is setting up a program for volunteers to teach English to Nicaraguans over the spring of 2006. English classes usually cost about $200 a month for Nicaraguans. Nicaraguan families often pool together their very limited resources to send one of their children to English class because they know that knowing English opens up a whole new world of opportunities in the increasingly important tourism sector.
This will be our first time directing the volunteer teaching program. Room and board will be covered for volunteers, but volunteers will need to pay their flight costs and any other spending money. Our program is still in the first stages of set up, but those interested can call us and we will keep you updated as our plans develop. For further information contact:
